The long awaited trip to
Africa was finally here. My friend Steve and I were to fly out from Los
Angeles International on September the 13th. The limo picked us up and
we are on our way. We flew to Atlanta where we spent the night so as
not to spend so many hours in the air. From Atlanta the next morning
we boarded a big jumbo jet in which we would spend the next twenty hours.
After the first eight or nine hours we landed on Sal
Island in the Atlantic Ocean,
about 400 miles (640 km) off the coast of western Africa. Here we
would re-fuel but we had to remain on the plane. With the ventilation
turned off it became very hot and stuffy. Someone behind me was not
well and I feared I may catch something.
At last
we once again were in the air and all was right with the world. We
briefly landed in Cape Town but for just a
moment and then we were in Johannesburg, South Africa. The entire
flight was trouble free but very cramped. Our plane was an Airbus and
it is a plane I would recommend staying off.

In South
Africa the cars are al right hand drive and are driven on the left side of
the road. Thank goodness we weren't driving as this could have been
exciting.
In the
two pictures below note the walls and gates. All the homes are
surrounded by eight foot walls with spikes, glass or electric high voltage
meant to keep out the bad people.

The
picture to the right is the Afton
Guest House where we stayed while in Johannesburg. Wonderful
accommodations and the people were as nice as could be.

Our room
in the guest home had it's own lounging area as shown to the left.
Our plan
was to spend one day and night in Johannesburg and then fly to Zimbabwe,
where we would be picked up by our PH (Professional Hunter-Guide). He
would take us into the town of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
